This program is designed for all physician and physician specialties: No pre-requisites are required. Upon completion of this program participants should be able to:

  • Describe the gap between recommendations that unanticipated outcomes be disclosed to patients and current clinical practice.
  • List common barriers to the effective disclosure of unanticipated outcomes to patients.
  • Articulate the core set of information patients want disclosed to them following unanticipated outcomes and describe effective communication strategies for providing this information to patients.
  • Describe the importance of empathic communication, including the role of apology, in the disclosure of unanticipated outcomes to patients.
  • Summarize what is currently known about the impact of disclosure on key outcomes, including patient trust, satisfaction, and the likelihood of malpractice claims.
  • Describe the resources currently available to WVMIC insured physicians to assist in the disclosure process.
