Clinical Services and Activities Overview

Drug Information Center
The Drug Information Center supports information requests from healthcare professionals practicing at Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) and affiliated sites. When the drug information center is closed, the on-call service responds to requests for drug information.

Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting
The adverse drug reaction reporting program is coordinated through the Drug Information Center.

Therapeutic Interchange
The formulary at CAMC is closed and governed by the Pharmacy &Therapeutics committee. Updated lists of therapeutic interchanges are provided by the Drug Information Center.

Clinical Pharmacy On-call Service
The on-call service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all CAMC healthcare professionals and is provided by pharmacy residents and clinical specialists. The on-call service responds to drug information requests, pharmacokinetic consults, pharmacotherapy consults, sepsis, and parenteral nutrition.

Sepsis Resuscitation and Treatment
Residents and clinical pharmacy specialists develop a plan of care that includes early goal-directed therapy: fluid resuscitation, vasopressors, antimicrobial therapy, treatment of adrenal insufficiency, tight glycemic control, and assessment for drotrecogin alfa.

Nutrition Support
Residents provide weekend coverage for patients requiring nutrition support. Residents are responsible for assessing new patients and beginning parenteral nutrition as well as monitoring patients who are being continued on parenteral nutrition.

Renal Monitoring Service
Residents participate in the renal monitoring program. While on-call, residents are assigned areas within the institution to optimize drug therapy for patients with compromised renal function based on predetermined criteria.

Treatment Algorithms
CAMC uses approved treatment algorithms for common diseases, including community acquired pneumonia and urinary tract infections. These guidelines are provided to the residents as reference and should be adhered to whenever possible.

Code team
Residents receive Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training during orientation. Clinical staff pharmacists respond to every code.
